أردنا بنشر هذا الكتاب، أن نترجم أعمالاً في السيرة النبوية من اللغة الألمانية، تتسم بقدر كبير من التعاطف مع الدين الإسلامي ومع رسوله محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم.
وأن نقدم للقارئ العربي نمطاً من الدارسين والمستشرقين الغربيين، الذين وإن لم يكن لهم إعتراض على الدين الإسلامي في ذاته، كما هو شأن نمط آخر؛ لكن أذهانهم كانت محملة بقدر غير قليل من المسبقات، أسستها أقلام إستشراقية سابقة، ورددتها من غير ملل لأزمنة متطاولة.
وكان على كل مستشرق مهما كانت موضوعيته، أن يتعرض لها ويبني عليها، في كل مرة أحكاماً جديدة تتناقض مع منطلاقته العلمية والأكاديمية.
تماماً مثلما أسس الكتاب الإسلاميون الرواد كثيراً من تلكم المقولات وأوردوها في مصادرهم المعتمدة.
