التعامل مع الدين سلاح ذو حدين: فهو "خطر" و "خلاص" في وقت واحد، لأنه كما يملك إمكانية وقابلية للتدمير الرهيب فهو قادر على البناء والحياة ويملك مفتاح السعادة النفسية والمجتمعية للإنسان. كما لا شك بأن الأسطورة بدورها لعبت ولا يزال تلعب دوراً مهماً في صياغة الفكر وإدارة الحياة العملية للإنسان ولها صلة قربى بفهم الدين وقضاياه، وذلك من خلال الإجابة على أسئلة تتعلق بالكون (الكوسمولوجيا)، ما فوق الطبيعة (الميتافيزيقا)، المجتمع وعالم النفس. من هنا فإن دراسة الموضوعين معاً تفتح نافذة على الحقيقة بمفهومها الفلسفي، الأجتماعي، الديني والإنساني.
إن المنهج المعتمد في هذه الدراسة هو المنهج المقارن غير أن الطرق التي اتبعناها في تحليل التصورات، تتقاطع مع مناهج العلوم الإجتماعية، وعلم أصول الفقه – بنظرة فلسفية – سواء لجهة تحليل الخطاب، والمضمون، أو لتحديد سياق الدراسة وفرضياتها الأساسية، وبناها المعرفية، أو لجهة تحليل مسار البرهنة والبحث عن مسار المفهوم في سياقه الفكري والديني.
وأما فصول الكتاب وأبحاثه فقد جاءت في مقدمة، وتمهيد، وفصول أربعة، وخاتمة. لقد اشتمل التمهيد على توطئة منهجية تتناول تعريف المفهوم وصور استخداماته المعاصرة.
ويتكفل الفصل الأول دراسة الأسطورة في الثقافة الغربية، وأما الفصل الثاني فيتكفل معالجة مفهوم الدين ودلالاته وتداعياته في المنظومة الثقافية الغربية،. وأما الفصل الثالث من الكتاب فيعالج مفهوم الدين وتفسيراته المختلفة في التراث الفكري للمسلمين، وذلك من خلال مقاربات فلسفية، وكلامية، وعرفاتنية وتفسيرية ضمن مباحث أربعة. وأما الفصل الرابع والأخير فيختص ببيان الأسطورة في الفكر الإسلامي، كما تتضمن الخاتمة استخلاصاً سريعاً لأهم أفكار الكتاب وتوصيات عدة بخصوص تطوير وتعميق الدراسة في المستقبل.
