ليس هذا الكتاب جديداً في نصوصه، وإن نكن حاولنا اختيار هذه النصوص بين الآثار الأدبية القديمة والحديثة المعاصرة. وقد يكون الجديد في الأمر أننا هدفنا في اختيارنا إلى تحقيق الأمور التالية:
-تعليم أكبر كمية ممكنة من المفردات العربية والفرنسية مما قد يعرف الطالب بعضه فيذكره الكتاب إياه، أو قد يكون لا يعرفه فيجده هنا في كتاب واحد يغنيه عن قراءات كثيرة عاد وقته المدرسي لا يتسع لها.
-الإلمام بتعابير وأمثال وأقوال مأثورة تساعد الطالب على فهم معان تحتاج إلى ثقافة تاريخية وأدبية ليست في متناول الطلاب كلهم في أيامنا الحاضرة وبرامجنا المطبقة حالياً.
-أن يكون النص بعيداً عن الغموض والجفاف، يرضي ويفيد، وقد حاولنا في النصوص الموضحة، العربية منها والفرنسية، أن لا ندع لفظة أو عبارة تستلزم توضيحاً، إلا عمدنا إلى توضيحها ضناً بوقت الطلاب والأساتذة، إذ ليس المقصود إضاعة الوقت في السعي وراء الكلمة في المعاجم بقدر ما هو استيعاب معنى اللفظة أو العبارة وكيف جرى استعمالها
-تذكير بعض الطلاب، وتعليم البعض الآخر، قواعد عربية وفرنسية في تركيب الجملة، أو تحول الكلمة من صيغة إلى صيغة قاصرين هذا العمل على ما لا بد منه، رغبة في الابتعاد عن التثقيل، وإدراكاً منا أن ليس في مثل الكتاب هذا المجال الوافي لأكثر، وأن العودة إلى الكتب المختصة تبقى النهج السليم لمن أراد تعمقاً وتضلعاً.
وقد جعلنا الإضافات (فوائد وملاحظات) محدودة، وفي أسفل كثير من النصوص ليتناولها الطالب تباعاً، فلا تكثر عليه دفعة واحدة، ولا يثقل عليه التوقف عندها. إنها تحت أبصاره، عند كل صفحة تقريباً، وله أن يستبقي منها في ذهنه ما وسعه.
