يضم هذا الكتاب بين طياته مجموعة من النصوص العربية متبوعة بترجمتها إلى الفرنسية، يعرضها على طلبة مراحل التعليم التي تنص برامجها على تمارين في النقل والتعريب. وهي مجموعة تقابل اختياراً مماثلاً من النصوص الفرنسية المصحوبة كذلك بترجمتها، وهذه جاءت معروضة في القسم الثاني من هذا الكتاب. هذا وقد تم توخي التدرج والتنويع في الاختيار، ويقصد بالتدرج توزيع النصوص من القصيدة إلى الطويل. حيث إن حجم النص في بعض الأحيان يتخذ معياراً لتوزيع التمارين على مختلف درجات الدراسة ومستويات الطلبة. وبالنظر إلى مقدار الحصص المخصصة للترجمة أولاً، وإلى خبرة الطالب وقدرته ثانياً، هذا بخصوص التدرج.
أما التنوع فيظهر في توزع النصوص بالقسطاس بين مؤلفين قدامى وكتاب معاصرين، ولعله تم غلبة المعاصرين على القدماء. وفي النصوص المعاصرة، حرص على أن تكون القسمة عادلة أيضاً بين النصوص المشرقية والنصوص المغربية، وهكذا جعل للكتاب التونسيين أكثر من النصف.
