وقد جعله في اثني عشر باباً: الباب الأول: في ذكر نسبه وأولاده وأزواجه، الباب الثاني: في ذكر إسلامه وهجرته، الباب الثالث: في ذكر بيعته وقصة الشورى، الباب الرابع: في ذكر الخوض في أمره وما نقموه عليه من الأمور التي حدثت في خلافته، الباب الخامس: في ذكر من سار إليه وحصره، الباب السادس: في ذكر ما قيل له في الخلع وما قال لهم، الباب السابع: في ذكر قتله وموضع قبره، الباب الثامن: في مبلغ سنه وخلافته، الباب التاسع: في ذكر صفته ولباسه، الباب العاشر: في ذكر سيرته وفضائله، الباب الحادي عشر: في ذكر ما رثي به من الأشعار، الباب الثاني عشر: في ذكر الأخذ بثأره.
هذا الكتاب فيه طائفة كبيرة من أخبار الصحابي عثمان بن عفان رضي الله عنه فهو مادة دسمة لمن أرادها، وحقائق تاريخية لمن إطلع عليها، فالمصنّف جمع من بطون التاريخ ثمرات وقطوف دانيات لذة للعقول وهواية للباحثين عن الحق.
