حسب وصف إدوار سعيد، تُضفي تجربة النفي ظلالها الدائمة على الإنسان المنْفِيْ، من حيث هو كائن منبوذ دائماً يحيا في زمان ومكان غريبين عنه، وإلى جوار بشر آخرين يلفظونه ولا يألفهم.
وفي ضوء الحديث عن المنفى والمنفيين وإشكالات الهوية، وطرائق تمثّل الخطاب الروائي العربي لهذه الإشكاليات كافة، يمكن القول إن علاقة الذّات بالهوية، والأنا بالآخر تتجلّى – بطرائق سردية وجمالية متعددة – في عدد غير قليل من قطاعات الرواية العربية الحديثة، مثل روايات المَنْفَى، وروايات الغربة، وروايات الشرق والغرب، وروايات صراع الحضارات،... إلخ.
وعلى الرغم، من ذلك، لم تتبلور بدقة نهجية كافية الحدود النظرية الفارقة بين مفهومي "المنفى" و"الغربة" على مستوى النقد الروائي العربي، فثمة تداخلات كثيرة قائمة بينهما، فضلاً عن تداخلات أخرى تصوغها علاقة الأنا بالآخر في الخطاب الروائي العربي؛ إذ يحيل بفضائه الشاسع إلى رواية الشرق والغرب، ورواية السجن (أو القمع)، ورواية الهجرة (أو المهجر).
لذلك، يعتمد منهج هذه الدراسة، وهي دراسة تحليلية بالأساس، المبدأ الذي تقوم عليه السرديات ما بعد البنيوية بوصفها إتجاهات، أو نظريات، تجاوزت مفهوم "الشكل" أو "الخطاب" بمعناه الضيق عند جيرار جينيت مثلاً، أو عند غيره من السرديين البنيويين، وانتقلت إلى مفهوم "السياق" بأبعاده المختلفة الذي مثّله في مدّه الأقصى ما يُعرف الآن بدراسات "النقد الثقافي".
وبالإضافة إلى ذلك، فإن هذا الكتاب سوف يفيد، كلما لزم الأمر، وبما لا يتعارض مع منطلقات المنهجية الرئيسة، من "نقد ما بعد الإستعمار" أو "نقد ما بعد الكولونيالية Post-Colonial Criticism"، وهو ما استوجب إستعانة نظرية ومنهجية أساسية بكتابات كل من ميخائيل باختين وإدوارد سعيد وفريدريك جيمسون على وجه التحديد، فضلاً عن آخرين كثيرين ممّن سعوا في الإتجاه ذاته قاصدين إلى تجاوز ذلك الفصل الحاد بين "الشكلي" و"الإجتماعي" أو بين "الجمالي" و"الثقافي".
