كثيرة هي الدراسات غير العربية التي حفرت في مفهوم "الراوي Narrator" من منظورات متباينة، فبدءاً من هنري جيمس وبرسي لوبوك، مروراً بولين بوث ونورمان فريدمان ورولان بارت وتودوروف، حتى بلوغ تنظيرات جيرار جينيت وشلوميت ريمون - كينان وبييرفيتو، وغيرهم كثير من النقّاد، لا يزال سؤال الراوي متصلاً بفنّ الرواية لديهم جميعاً رغم إختلاف توجهاتهم النظرية ومرجعياتهم الفلسفية؛ لكن: كيف نتعامل هنا مع الراوي؟ ولماذا روايات محمد البساطي بصفة خاصة؟ بعيداً عن مقولات "السرديّات الكبرى" أو "المرويّات الجليلة"، فقد احتفت سردية البساطي بطبقات الظلّ من فقراء ومهمّشين وعائشين على الضفاف وأرامل وأيتام وعجائز وعوانس ورحّالة ومهاجرين ومغتربين، وكل من كانوا يحيون على حوافّ المجتمعات ويقتاتون على هوامشها.
لقد تحوَّل راوي البساطي في كثير من رواياته المتأخِّرة، من مجرد راوٍ محايد أو راوٍ كان يدّعي الحياد في أغلب أعماله القصصية الباكرة، إلى راوٍ هجَّاء ساخر حدّ السخرية السوداء، متورِّط تماماً في التهكّم من تراتبية زائفة ينهض عليها مجتمع مصري وعربي مفكِّك ومفتَّت وعبثي إلى أقصى حدّ.
ولعلّ أهم ما تمتاز به سردية البساطي، وتتفرّد أيضاً، أنها لم تكن سوى سردية استطاعت أن تخلق لنفسها أسلوبها البلاغي الخاص الذي يعتمد إستراتيجيات التكثيف الدلالي والجمل الحادّة المبتورة دون رطان، كما خلقت شخصياتها وأماكنها وأنماطها البشرية المائزة؛ الأمر الذي أنتج نصوصاً قصصية وروائية هي أقرب إلى روح النوفيلا المدهشة، المشحونة بدراما الحياة وتراجيديا الإنسان المقهور، التي كرّست نفسها للتعبير عن بلاغة المقموعين والضعفاء والمهمَّشين وكائنات الظلّ.
