تشكل رواية «الأم» شهادة فريدة للاعتراف بدور الأم في حياة مؤلفها الكاتب الصيني بنغ شويه مينغ. فهي تربط حياته القديمة بحياته الآنية بغرض تحديد هوية الذات من خلال الكتابة. ولكن الوصول إلى هوية الذات ليس شيئاً سهلاً، لأن هذه الذات منفتحة على عناصر أخرى تلعب الذاكرة واللغة والخيال في صوغها لتظهر بأكمل وجه. والمتأمل لرواية «الأم» يجد أنها تقدم جانباً سيرياً في حياة راويها وذلك من خلال شواهد يستحضرها إلى مسرح السرد "حقائق ذاتية حياتية معيشة" تتم مقاربتها من منظور نفسي، يُمكن للقارئ تتَّبعُ مضمونها في العمل من خلال إشكاليَّة الأم بين الواقع والمثال، فهي تبحث في فكرة وجود الأم ومن ثم غيابها وأثره على الأبناء. فالكاتب يذكر سوء تفاهمه مع أمه وإهماله لها والأضرار التي تسبب بها وندمه على فراقها، لذلك يحاول التكفير عن ذنبه بالكتابة ويتمظهر ذلك من خلال استبطان عميق للذات/ الساردة والاعتماد على لغة البوح والشاعرية. أما في الواقع فقد قطع آلآف الكيلومترات من بكين إلى شيانغشي لاقتفاء أثر أمه، وللبحث عن جذوره ولكن بعد فوات الأوان أي موتها.
يقول الكاتب/ الراوي: "حياة أمي معاناة. حياة أمي أسطورة. أمي سيرة حياة لا تموت، أمي روح لا تُقهر، تُضحّي في سبيل ابنها، قلبها واسع سعة بحر، لا يحتويها كتاب". وهذا الكتاب «الأم» يعتبر النسخة الصينية لكتاب «الاعترافات» للأديب الفرنسي المشهور روسو حيث أثار الصدى لدى جميع البنات والأبناء في العالم لمراجعة كيفية التعامل مع أمهاتهم والحث على الحرص عليهم وبِرّهم في حياتهم. والكتاب "يتضمن النسخة المعدلة لرواية الأم من دار الأدب والفنون بشاندونغ 270 ألف مقطع صيني وظلت في رفوف الكتب المروجة في المكتبات الصينية منذ إصدارها عام 2011 وأصبحت من المواد التعليمية الأدبية في المدارس والأجهزة الحكومية الصينية".
