يعد كتاب (الشمائل المحمدية) للإمام أبي عيسى محمد بن عيسى بن سَوْرة السُّلَمي الترمذي البوغي المتوفى سنة (279) هـ من أجلِّ ما أُلفٍّ في شمائل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم الخِلْقية والخُلُقية.
وقد جمع الإمام الترمذي في هذا الكتاب ستةً وخمسين باباً، وذكر فيه أكثر من أربع مئة حديث، يصف فيها النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وصفاً دقيقاً في أخلاقه وتواضعه ولباسه وطعامه وشرابه ونومه، وصلاته وصومه وعبادته وجلوسه وكلامه، وعيشه وحَياته وأدبه مع أهله وأصحابه، ومعاملته مع الوفود عليه، ومع عامة المسلمين وخاصتهم، ولا يمكن للمسلم أن يتخلق بأخلاقه صلى الله عليه وسلم ويتأدَّب بأدابه ويَأْتَسِيَ بسيرته، إلا بمعرفة شمائله وصفاته صلى الله عليه وسلم في الأمور التي تتعلق بالحياة اليومية، والنواحي الإجتماعية.
وقد صنف العلماء في هذا الموضوع قديماً وحديثاً كتباً كثيرة، مفردة وغير مفردة، ومن أحسنهم جمعاً لذلك الإمام الترمذي؛ ولهذا الكتاب شروح كثيرة، جمع المحقق منها اسم اثنين وسبعين كتاباً، ومختصرات كثيرة جمع منها اسم خمسة عشر كتاباً، وقد تُرجم هذا الكتاب إلى عدة لغات، ولهذا الكتاب عدة مخطوطات في المكتبة الظاهرية بدمشق وغيرها.
اعتمد الأستاذ عبده كوشك في التحقيق على أربع مخطوطات منها، فحقق نصوص الكتاب عليها، وخرج أحاديثه معتمداً على علماء الحديث الموثوقين، ورجع إلى الكتب المعتمدة في الحديث النبوي الشريف، وشرح الألفاظ العربية، وعرف ببعض الأعلام والمعالم والأماكن، وترجم للإمام الترمذي ترجمة موجزة.
