يعد كتاب الشمائل المحمدية من أجل ما ألف في محاسن المصطفي (صلى الله عليه وسلم) الخلقية والخلقية، ومن أجمع ما كتب في الشمائل المحمدية، من عباده وذكر دعاء ومزاح وآداب، وصلاوة منطق وعذوبة صوت، وقوة سمع وبصر. استهل المؤلف وهو أبو عيسى الترمذي كتابه بباب تحدث فيه عن خلق رسول الله، وفي الأبواب الأخرى تحدث عن صفة النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم) البدنية المقدسة، ثم انتقل بعد ذلك لما يتعلق بالمظهر العام أقسم الأحاديث على أبواب تناولت كل ما يتعلق بالمظهر العام، من الملبس، والدرع، والسيف، والنعل. ثم أتى بأبواب متتالية تصف بدقة حياته اليومية من أكل، وشرب، ووضوء، ووصف عاداته في المسائل الفردية الدائبة التكرار والتي تعبر عن دلائل لها قيمتها في التعريف بصاحبها وبشخصيته، كالعادات في المشي، والنوم، واليقظة، والجلوس، وما إلى ذلك. وتعرض بعد ذلك لعاداته المتعلقة بالمظهر الشخصي الاجتماعي في التطيب، الكلام والمزاح وغيرها. وهذه المظاهر تدل على ما اتصف به من الخلق العظيم. لذلك نجد الترمذي عقبها بأبواب في الجانب الأخلاقي السامي، الذي أثنى به المولى على رسوله-(صلى الله عليه وسلم)، وبهذا لم يبق جانب ولا زاوية لم تشملها أبواب الكتاب، فختم الترمذي كتاب الشمائل ختاماً منطقياً، فجاء بهذه الأبواب الثلاثة على التوالي في خاتمة الكتاب: 1-باب ما جاء في وفاء رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وسلم)، 2-باب ما جاء في ميراث رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وسلم)، 3-باب ما جاء في رؤية رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وسلم). ولما كان هذا الكتاب من أحسن ما صنف في باب منذ عنى "حسن أحمد إسبر" بتحقيقه وإخراجه من هذه الطبعة التي بين أيدينا وبالرجوع لعمله في التحقيق نجد أنه قد اعتنى بـ: ضبط النص وذلك بمقابلته على عدة نسخ، ضبط تشكيل الأحاديث النبوية بالشكل الكامل، شرح غريب الحديث تخريج الأحاديث بشكل مختصر، ترقيم الأحاديث النبوية، وضع فهرس لأبواب الكتاب، ووضع ترجمة موجزة للإمام الترمذي والتعريف بكتابه الشمائل.
