يعد كتاب الشمائل المحمدية للإمام الترمذي، من الكتب العظيمة التي تحكي أوصاف المصطفى صلى الله عليه وسلم، والتي من خلالها يتعرف المسلم الكريم إلى أوصاف هذا الرسول العظيم، ليسير بنور سيرته، ويتأسى بكمال أخلاقه صلى الله عليه وسلم. وكيف لا يطمح المسلم بالتعرف عليه صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو سيد السادات، وفخر الكائنات، الذي رفعه الله تعالى أعلى الدرجات، ورقاه فوق جميع أهل المراتب والمقامات، صلوات ربي وسلامه عليه.
هذا وقد ضم هذا الكتاب (397) حديثاً شريفاً، تحكي أوصافه صلى الله عليه وسلم وما يتعلق بها من أمور كانت تلازمه طيلة حياته صلوات ربي وسلامه عليه، جمعها مؤلف هذا الكتاب الإمام الترمذي. وإتماماً للفائدة فقد أضف إلى شرحاً يوضح معانيها، بحيث يسهل على المطالع فهم ما جاء بها من ألفاظ بليغة، يحتاجها الكل إن حلت رموزها. أضف إلى ذلك، بيان درجة هذه الأحاديث، من حيث الصحة والضعف، مع ترجمة موجزة لراوية الحديث الذي غالباً يكون من الصحابة الذين اختارهم الله تعالى لنبيه صلى الله عليه وسلم.
