يقدم الباحث في هذا الكتاب صورة رائعة من معارك الفكر الإنساني في ميدان علم النفس، لكي يستخلص القارئ منها كيف يختلف قادة الفكر ومتى يتفقون، حيث يرى البعض أن أفضل طريق لفهم سلوك الإنسان هو دراسة عناصر بسيطة منه، كل عنصر على حدة، وكلما أمعن في تفتيتها إلى جزيئات أصغر كلما ازدادت الثقة في إمكان قياسها والتعرف عليها بدقة. بينما يرى آخرون أن دراسة الأجزاء أو الذرات منفصلة لا يمكنها أن توصل إلى فهم حقيقة شخصية الإنسان، فالفرد ليس مجرد مجموع هذه الأجزاء، بل توجد تفاعلات فيما بينها، كما أن الحياة العقلية غاية في الثراء والتعقيد، ويستحيل فهم الشخصية إلا بدراسة الفرد برمته أي ككل منظم.
والباحث يعرض هذا الفكر في ميدان علم النفس بتنوعه، فبعد أن قام بتعريف الشخصية ووصفها عرض لنظرية سمات الشخصية ولنظرية التحليل النفسي ولحيل الدفاعية اللاشعورية متحدثاً بعد ذلك عن نظرية "آدلر" و"يونج" و"روجرز" في الشخصية، وعن نظرية الذات عند "هورني" ليتناول بعد ذلك بالبحث التأثيرات الاجتماعية والثقافية في الشخصية والعوامل الوراثية والبيئة في بناء الشخصية والحكم على الشخصية مختتماً كتابه بفصل حول قياس الشخصية. وعرض المؤلف لهذا الفكر جاء بأسلوب مبسط يسهل على الجميع استيعابه وفهمه والاستمتاع به والاستفادة منه.
