لا تحظى دراسة السلطة السياسية في متخيل الرعية بأي اهتمام في العالم الإسلامي، على الرغم من أن الصراع عليها يشكل أحد المحاور الرئيسة لتاريخ الإسلام. ينطلق هذا الكتاب من المكانة الخاصة التي تحتلها هذه السلطة في عقلية الرعية، ومن ترسّخ هذه المكانة في وعي كلٍّ منهما.
غير أن الأمر لا ينحصر في هذا وحده، بل يتعداه إلى استعمال السلطة السياسية الحاكمة رموزًا وصورًا تمثّل السلطة الحاكمة وتعبّر عنها. ينتج من تراكم هذه الأمور، إضافة إلى أعمال الحكام وقراراتهم وممارسات السلطة السياسية، بناء متخيَّل معيَّن في ذهنية الرعية التي تساهم في نشره والدعوة إليه؛ فالرموز كالألقاب والنقود وغيرهما عناصر مهمة وضرورية لها، تتشبث بها تأكيدًا لسلطتها وحكمها، ولأنها تعبّر عن سلطة الحاكم، وتعمل على تركيزها في عقلية الرعية، التي بدورها لا تتقبّل وجود سلطة سياسية حاكمة إلّا مصحوبة بتلك الرموز.
يهيمن الطابع التاريخي على الكتاب، ويتمحور بشكل أساسي على الشارات وأشكال الهيئة والصور التي جادت بها الأدبيات التاريخية المتصلة بالمرابطين، فيقدم صورة الحاكم المرابطي، بعد بحثه في دلالات السلطة السياسية الرمزية، وميثولوجيتها، وامتلاكها شرعيتها عند الرعية.
