في كتابه هذا يحاول الدكتور "ساسين عساف" دراسة الشعر انطلاقاً من وجهة نظر تدعو إلى "دراسة لغته" من دون التخلي عن دراسة الأصول التاريخية والإجتماعية والنفسية للشعر، أي شرح اللغة الشعرية بذاتها ولذاتها بدون إفراغها من دلائلتيها التاريخية والسيكولوجية.
يعد هذا العمل خطوة رائدة على طريق النقد الأدبي يهم الدارسين الذين يوجهون اهتماماتهم إلى الشعر في مفهومه الفلسفي أو التنطيمي للكائن البشري وللوجود بصورة عامة. يرى فيه الدكتور "ساسين عساف" وسيلة انتظام الوجود وأكثر من تعبير عن مشاعر وانطباعات بأسلوب مجازي، بل هو نظام رؤيوي "تحدد في سياق لغوي مكثف ومعقد يوازي أي سياق علمي أو فلسفي. إن أهمية هذا السياق يقود إلى كونه يرى ويفسَر ويعبَر عن موقف الكائن البشري (...) هذا ما نحاول ن نجيب عنه في هذا البحث مع الإشارة إلى أنني جعلت "الصورة الشعرية" وهي أحد عمادي لغة الشعر، محوراً له، تاركاً "الإيقاع"، وهو العماد الثاني لهذه اللغة...".
محتويات الكتاب: 1- الفن، 2- اللغة الشعرية مادة وشكل، 3- الصورة الشعرية، 4- الصورة في بعض الإتجاهات الشعرية، وأخيراً: تأمل أخير بمثابة خلاصة.
