تُعنى هذه السلسلة بالدراسات اللغوية: قديمها وحديثها، نظريِّها وتطبيقيِّها؛ انطلاقاً من أن اللغة هوية الأمة، ورمز حضارتها، وعنوان أصالتها، ومثال كرامتها.. إنها تُعنى بالتراث اللغوي تحقيقاً ودراسة، وغربلة بذور الموت من بذور الحياة فيه، عنايتها بما جدّ في الحقل اللغوي من بحوث ودراسات. وبقدر ما تحفل بالجانب النظري في علوم اللغة تحفل بالجانب التطبيقي ومناهجه المتعددة؛ أملاً في أن تواكب اللغة الحياة، باعتبارها كائناً حياً ينمو ويتطور.
يناقش هذا الكتاب قضية أساسية شغلت الفكر اللغوي، ولا تزال وهي: مدى تأثير اختلاف النظم اللغوية في اختلاف الرؤى الثقافية للكون والعالم. وينطلق من فرضية "وورف" التي ترى أن اللغة تحدد الفكر، وتشكل الرؤية للكون والعالم. ويتابع تطور هذه الفرضية، وما اعتورها من نقد إيجابي يعدّل ويطوّر، ومن نقد سلبي يهدم وينقض، حتى ينتهي إلى خاتمة واقعية، تؤكد أن اللغة ظاهرة ثقافية، تتشكل برؤية أصحابها، وتقوم - في الوقت نفسه - بتشكيل عوامل استمرار هذه الرؤية، لكنها قابلة دائماً للتغيّر وإعادة التشكيل.
