نجد في هذا الكتاب أهم هموم النساء العربيات ومشكلاتهنّ في مختلف المناطق والأنظمة السياسية والخلفيات الثقافية، قد تُرجمت إلى تساؤلات نظرية وإلى حركة نسائية ناشطة أكثر وضوحاً وعلانية.
أما النقاش حول مصطلحات مثل "الجندر" و"النسوية الجندرية" و"النسوية الإسلامية" فكان تعبيراً عن تفرّعات النسوية العربية، التي أُخضعت إلى بحث تنقيبي حول دلالاتها وإمكانية تطبيقها.
وقد عكست مجموعة من المقالات الالتزام العميق بِقِيَم الحرية والمساواة وتقرير المصير والديمقراطية الحقّة، وهو ما يكشف عن رغبات عميقة لدى الناس، بما في ذلك النساء في هذا الجزء العربي، من العالم.
كما أثار عدد من الأبحاث الجدل حول "النسوية الإسلامية" في المجتمعات العربية، وحول السُبُل التي اتبعتها هذه النسوية في حفر مسارها المتأثّر والمؤثِّر في عمليات التغيير.
وانفرد العديد من البحوث بالتركيز على العلاقة بين حلقة القوة الإمبريالية الأوسع والجهات الفاعلة والمصالح المحلية، مع اهتمام خاص بالتحليل النسوي لهذه العلاقات، بحيث جرى ربط ذلك بالواقع العربي والإسلامي، بقدر ما جرى الربط بعالم الجنوب.
ضمّ هذا الكتاب تسعة وثلاثين بحثاً، كانت، جميعها، قد قدِّمت خلال مؤتمر عُقد في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت (4- 7/10/2009)؛ نَظَّم المؤتمر "تجمّع الباحثات اللبنانيات" بالتعاون مع "ملتقى المرأة والذاكرة" في القاهرة، و"معهد الدراسات النسائية" في جامعة بيرزيت في فلسطين المحتلّة، و"برنامج أنيس المقدسي للآداب" في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت
