إن القرآن الكريم المعجزة الخالدة مهما تقدم العلم وازدهر، فهو قد حوى من كنوز المعرفة ما لا يمكن لبشر أن يحيط بها. وقد تلقفه الصحابة رضوان الله عليهم بشغف وحب، فأقبلوا عليه دارسين متأملين فبهرهم بإعجازه وبلاغته فاستيقنتهم أنفسهم أنه كتاب لا يأتيه الباطل من بين يديه ولا من خلفه.
ونظراً لتشعب العلوم والمعارف، ولحاجة الأمة الإسلامية إلى مزيد من التبيان لهذا الذكر الحكيم بدأ العلماء بتدوين علوم القرآن، حيث صنف في فضائل القرآن (وهو أحد فروع علوم القرآن) أعلام متقدمون، ومن أشهرهم الإمام أبو عبيد القاسم بن سلام، ومن الكتب المهمة في هذا المجال كتاب "فضائل القرآن" والذي لاقى اهتماماً كبيراً فانتشرت قراءته شرقاً وغرباً، وتأتي أهميته أنه قد استوعب أكثر المؤلفات التي سبقته في هذا الموضوع، وأنه قد تأثرت به كل الكتابات اللاحقة أو استفادت منه والتي كتبت في موضوع علوم القرآن الكريم. وقد اعتمد أبو عبيد في كتابه "فضائل القرآن"، في رواياته على طريقة المحدثين، وروايته في الغالب عن الثقات، فكتابه يشمل زهاء ألف راوٍ يوجد من بينهم عدد قليل تكلم فيهم أصحاب الجرح والتعديل، وقد تنوع رواته الذين يروي عنهم حسب الموضوع المروي، ففي التفسير يروي عن المفسرين وفي الحديث يروي عن المحدثين... كما أنه حاول استقصاء جميع ما تيسر له من الأسانيد والروايات لكل خبر.
