قال الذهبي في «السير»:
الإِمَامُ، الحَافِظُ، المُجَوِّدُ، المصَنِّفُ، أَبُو العَبَّاسِ جَعْفَرُ بنُ مُحَمَّدِ بنُ المُعْتَزِّ بنِ مُحَمَّدِ بنِ المُسْتَغْفِرِ بنِ الفَتْحِ بنِ إِدْرِيْسَ المُسْتَغْفِرِيُّ، النَّسَفِيُّ.
مُؤَلّف كِتَاب (مَعْرِفَة الصَّحَابَة) ، وَكِتَاب (الدَّعَوات) ، وَكِتَاب (دلاَئِل النُّبُوَّة) ، وَكِتَاب (فَضَائِل القُرْآن) ، وَكِتَاب (الشَّمَائِل) ، وَكِتَاب (خُطبَ النَّبِيّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ -) ، وَكِتَاب (تَاريخ نَسَف) ، وَكِتَاب (الطِّبّ) ، وَكِتَاب (تَاريخ كِشْ) ، وَغَيْر ذَلِكَ.
حَدَّثَ عَنْ: زَاهِرِ بنِ أَحْمَدَ السَّرَخْسِيّ، وَإِبْرَاهِيْمَ بنِ لُقْمَان، وَأَبِي سَعِيْدٍ عَبْدِ اللهِ بن مُحَمَّدِ بنِ عَبْدِ الوَهَّابِ الرَّازِيِّ، وَعَلِيِّ بنِ مُحَمَّدِ بنِ سَعِيْدٍ السَّرَخْسِيّ، وَجَعْفَرِ بن مُحَمَّدٍ البُخَارِيّ، وَخَلْقٍ كَثِيْرٍ.
وَلَمْ يَرْحَلْ إِلَى العِرَاقِ فِيمَا أَعلم.
حَدَّثَ عَنْهُ: الحَسَنُ بنُ عَبْدِ المَلِكِ النَّسَفِيُّ، وَأَبُو نَصْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بنُ جَعْفَرٍ الكَاسَنِيُّ، وَالحَسَنُ بنُ أَحْمَدَ السَّمَرْقَنْدِيُّ الحَافِظُ، وَالخَطِيْبُ إِسْمَاعِيْلُ بنَ مُحَمَّدٍ النُّوحِي، وَآخَرُوْنَ.
وَكَانَ مُحْدِّثَ مَا وَرَاء النَّهر فِي زَمَانِهِ.
مَوْلِدُهُ: بَعْد الخَمْسِيْنَ وَثَلاَثِ مائَةٍ بِيَسِيْرٍ.
وَمَاتَ: بنَسَف سَنَة اثْنَتَيْنِ وَثَلاَثِيْنَ وَأَرْبَعِ مائَةٍ، عَنْ ثَمَانِيْنَ سَنَةً - رَحِمَهُ اللهُ -.

لقد تناول فيه مؤلفه فضائل القرآن العظيم وثواب من تعلمه وعلمه وأجر المشاهر به والمتمتع، وتحسين الصوت فيه والتغني به، وما أعد الله عز وجل لتاليه في الجنان، ثم ذكر فضل بعض السور والآيات، مختتماً هذا المؤلف القيم بذكر من لم يكن في جوفه شيء من القرآن.
