إذا ما رجعنا إلى سيرة الشريف الرضي سنعرف أنه هو الذي جمع مفردات "النهج وذلك في 400هـ ولكن ثمة من نسب جمع النهج إلى الشريف المرتضى، أخي الرضي، من هؤلاء جرجي زيدان، إذ قال "والصحيح إنه من جمع الشريف المرتضى"، وكذا قال بروكلمان، أما شوقي ضيف فقد قال في كتابه "تاريخ الأدب العربي-العصر العباسي" "إن اعتراف الشريف الرضي بجمعه النهج دليل على وضعه إياه، وبذلك قد خلط بين الوضع والجمع" في الحقيقة إن تلك الأقوال لا تريد التشكيك في من جمع "النهج" بقدر ما تريد التضبيب حول عائدية "النهج" أصلاً، إلى الإمام علي عليه السلام، وذلك للتقليل من شأنه وشأن أمير المؤمنين رضي الله عنه.
والكتاب الذي بين أيدينا يهدف إلى دحض هذه الأقوال وغيرها وإلى تسليط الضوء على ما صدر من أقوال المشككين فيناقشها ويرد عليها بمنهج علمي معتمداً الحقائق التاريخية والمنطقية التي لا تقبل الطعن والرد.
