تصدر هذه الطبعة من هذا الكتاب، على كره مني، فقد كنت أتمنى أن تتاح لي إعادة النظر فيه، بعد أن مضى على طبعته الأولى زهاء أربعين سنة، وكم كنت أودّ أن أرى لزملائي من الباحثين، في الجامعة وخارجها، دراسات تسند هذه الدراسة وتضيف عليها، وتوسع بعض جوانبها، على أن ذلك لم يحدث لا في بلادنا العربية، ولا في الخارج.
ولعلّ إنصراف النقد العربي عن هذا الموضوع هو جز من إنصرافه العام عن العناية بفنون الأدب الحديثة، عن قصة وأقصوصة ومسرحية، وإيثاره الترجمة على التأليف، أما النقد الغربي فلم تصدر فيه في في السنوات الأخيرة، فيما أعلم، دراسة بوسعها أن تصحح رأياً أو تضيف جديداً، وأكثر عناية مدرسي الأدب وفنونه في الجامعات الغربية، وخاصة الأمريكية، منصبة على قراءة النصوص وتحليلها وإستخراج القيم الفنية من داخلها.
يضاف على هذا كله أن المقالة لم تعد في هذا القرن فنّاً من الفنون الأدبية التي تتجلى فيها قدرة الأديب على الإبداع، إذ تحولت إلى أداة سريعة في يد الصحافة، أو غدت وسيلة من وسائل الباحث؛ يعرض فيها رأياً في موضوعه، أو يبسط نتيجة من النتائج التي توصل إليها خلال دراساته، مما لا يمتد ويتفرع ليشغل كتاباً بكامله.
ولذا، أصبح البحث في فن المقالة اليوم، لا يدخل في نطاق دراسة النثر الفني، بل أصبحت قواعده وشروطه ادخل في قواعد المباحث العلمية.
