يتوجه هذا الكتاب للطلبة وللعاملين والمتدربين في الصحافة ومؤسسات الإعلام على السواء، فكلهم يحتاجون إلى مرجع سهل ممتع، يقدم لهم أصول المقالة، وسائر قضاياها بأسلوب مبسط يقوم على تكامل الجانب النظري مع الإطار التطبيقي.
وهكذا يأتي الكتاب في ثلاثة أبواب، أما أولها فقد خصص للإطار النظري، وهو بمثابة بناء أرضية ومرجعية تتوخى تقديم المفاهيم الخاصة بالمقالة، وأهم معالم تطورها عند العرب والغربيين، وعرض في هذا الباب لعناصر المقالة، وشروط بنائها، كما بين أنواعها الكبرى، وأهم مدارس كتابتها عند العرب، وختم الباب بتلخيص الخصائص الفنية للمقالة، وبالتعريف بأهم مشاهير الكتاب في هذا الفن. وقد جمعنا في هذا الباب بين المراجع العربية والأجنبية، وبالنظر إلى طبيعة فن المقالة التي لا تنتمي لثقافة دون أخرى.
أما الباب الثاني فتجاوز العرض النظري إلى العمل التدريبي التطبيقي حيث خصصه لمهارات كتابة المقالة، وبين شروط الكتابة الجيدة مما يحسن بالكاتب أن يراعيه ويتبعه من غير إسراف أو ضغط للكتابة لتتواءم مع الشروط، فهي شروط مرنة وقواعد عامة، تم توضحها باختيار مقالات جيدة لتطبيق تلك القواعد عليها.
أما الباب الثالث فهو أيضاً في الإطار التطبيقي، وعرض فيه لتحليل المقالة، إذ أن عملية التحليل تسهم في فهم أعمق لأبعاد المقالة، ولشروطها الفنية المتعددة، واعتمد على التحليل التطبيقي الذي يهيئ الدارس لإنجاز تطبيقات أخرى مماثلة.
