جاء البحث في خمسة فصول: تناولت في الفصل الأول: (السيرافي) اسمه ومولده، ورحلته من سيراف إلى بغداد، وأخلاقه، وأساتذته، وثقافته، وتلاميذه، ووفاته، وآثاره، وفيها أشرت إلى النسخ الموجودة في شرحه لكتاب سيبويه، وكتبه التي ذكرتها بعض كتب التراجم، والأخرى التي تُنسب إليه، مرجحاً نسبة بعضها ونافياً نسبة بعضها الآخر.
ودرست في الفصل الثاني: (السيرافي وسيبويه) مكانة كتاب سيبويه وجهد سيبويه في كتابه، وفي الفصل الثالث: "منهج السيرافي" قمت أولاً بمقارنة أبواب شرح السيرافي بأبواب كتاب سيبويه ذاكراً الأبواب التي أضافها السيرافي إلى الشرح والأبواب التي أدمجها ببعضها لضرورة منهجية.
وفي الفصل الرابع: "موارد السيرافي" تحدثت عن موقف السيرافي من السماع والقياس والتعليل والتأويل انتقلت بعد ذلك للحديث عن موقفه من الشواهد: القرآن الكريم وقراءاته، والحديث الشريف، والشعر والنثر.
وفي الفصل الخامس: "أثر السيرافي"، عمدت أولاً إلى مقارنة شرح السيرافي بشروح الكتاب الأخرى التي وصلت إلينا، لنرى من خلال الموازنة الأثر الكبير الذي تركه شرح أبي سعيد السيرافي وما تفردّ به عن شروح الكتاب الأخرى سواء من حيث المنهج الذي اتبعه أو من حيث عنايته بنص الكتاب وشواهده، أو بالآراء النحوية التي ذكرها سيبويه.
