مصطفى جواد واحد من أعلام نهضة العراق في العصر الحديث، وموسوعة معارف: في اللغة والنحو والتصريف والبلاغة والشعر والأخبار والسير والقصص والتاريخ والوفيات والكتب والرجال والخطط والبلدان والآثار، ذاع اسمه وانتشر في المجامع العلمية واللغوية العربية، والمجالس الأدبية والفكرية، مؤرخاً ثبتاً، ومحققاً لا يرقى الشك إليه، ولغوياً أحاط بمملكة اللغة الواسعة المترامية الأطراف، ومجمعياً يرفع قواعدها وبنيانها، بعد أن نشأ راغباً فيها لعلو مكانتها في نفسه، محباً لها منذ أن تفتحت طفولته، واستمر في دراسته التي كان لاجتهاده الذاتي فيها الأثر الكبير في تنمية مواهبه واكتمال ثقافته التي اتسعت فشملت جوانب متعددة.
في العشرينات من هذا القرن، بدأ مصطفى جواد رحلته العلمية يبحث ويعقب، ويحقق وينقب ثم أخذ ينتج وإنتاجه غزير ومتنوع، عني بمواضيع عديدة، أخصها اللغة وأعمها التاريخ، تأليفاً في حين، وتحقيقاً ونشراً في حين آخر، ثم امتد نشاطه إلى الترجمة فعاناها شعراً ونثراً، على أن الحقل الذي برزت فيه أصالته وتجلت فيه موهبته هو اللغة، فكان للعربية ابناً من أكرم أبنائها براً بها، وحدباً عليها يقوم ما أعوج ويصوب ما زل به اللسان، لتظل العربية: "رائقة المشارب، نقية من الشوائب، سليمة من عبث المتهاونين، بريئة من غلط المترجمين".
وقد كان لبعض ذوي العلم متابعة لتراث مصطفى جواد في حياته وبعد مماته، ولكن هذه المتابعة بقدر ما اهتمت بتراثه اللغوي والتاريخي إلا أنها لم تستطع الوقوف على كل ما خلفه الدكتور مصطفى جواد مبثوثاً في أكثر المجلات والصحف عراقية وعربية بدءاً بسنة 1924، وحتى مماته 1969م، ناهيك عن تراثه النحوي الذي ضم كتابه "المباحث اللغوية في العراق" إشارات يسيرة إلى بعض آرائه فيه.
عن هذه الشخصية العراقية تتحدث الدراسة التي بين يدينا حيث اهتمت بالتعريف بمصطفى جواد كمؤرخ ولغوي ونحوي وصرفي وشاعر وسعت لدراسة حياته وشخصيته ومنهجه وبينت منزلته العلمية، وذلك بغية تجلية شخصية مصطفى جواد وبيان منزلته في فنون المعرفة التي عني بها...
