يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى الإجابة على سؤال "بسيط" هو: كيف ينظر العرب المعاصرون إلى تاريخهم الإجتماعي الإقتصادي؛ التاريخ الإجتماعي الإقتصادي هو تاريخ العلاقات الإجتماعية، سواء ضمن المجتمع المعني أو فيما بينه وبين المجتمعات الأخرى؛ ويضم العلاقات ما بين الطبقات والفئات والأقوام وكذلك العلاقة بين السادة والمسودين وبين المالكين والمعدمين...
تاريخ العلاقات هذا، نادراً ما يتعلمه تلامذتنا وطلابنا، ونادراً ما تهتم له كتب التاريخ، ومع ذلك فهو التاريخ الأكثر جدارة بالإهتمام والبحث، لأنه الأكثر تجريداً للواقع وبالتالي الأقرب للفهم والأقدر على تقديم الدروس والعبر، أما التاريخ التقليدي، الذي يتعلمه طلابنا فهو تاريخ السلالات الحاكمة والمؤامرات والحروب، مليء بمعلومات يختلط فيها الضروري بالنافل من أحداث وأسماء وأزمان، التي لكثرتها تحجب عن العيون الرؤية العامة، على طريقة؛ من كثرة الأشجار لم ير الغابة!.
إذن، فالسؤال، أو بالأحرى: الجواب ليس كما يبدو للوهلة الأولى بسيطاً، تضاف إلى ذلك إشكالية تحديد "العرب المعاصرين"، فمن يستطيع أن يقدم لنا نظرة العرب المعاصرين إلى تاريخهم؟! من يستطيع ذلك، حتى لو أعدنا صياغة السؤال بالشكل التالي: كيف ينظر العرب المعاصرون، ممثلين بفئتهم المثقفة أو بمفكريهم؟.
في الحقيقة اختار الكتاب تسعة كتاب عرب فقط، يمثلون إتجاهاً فكرياً عريضاً واحداً ينظر إلى التاريخ (بهذه الصورة أو تلك، إلى هذا الحدّ أو ذاك) نظرة مادوية جدلية، بالتأكيد، هذا الإتجاه لا يمثل عموم العرب ولا يضم أغلب المثقفين، لكنني أرى أنه الإتجاه الأهم، نظراً لعلميته وموضوعيته وحداثته النسبية وبالتالي نظراً للمستقبل الذي ينتظره أو الذي يُنتظر منه في مجال البحث والفهم التاريخيين.
