في هذا الكتاب ملفّ وضع فيه المؤلف بعض ما كتبه شمران الياسري واختاره ليضعه في مجموعات طُبعت وهو في العراق، فاختار بعض ما ورد في مجموعة (ثمن ملح الخبز) وما ورد في مجموعة (شجرة التفاح البيضاء)، كما وضع (بتصرف) أو (نصاً) بعض ما كُتب عنه، فأشار إلى المصدر واسم الكاتب وعنوان المادة، وقد اعتمدت عملية الجمع على المواد المنشورة بالإضافة إلى المواد التي وردت بمناسبة إعداد الكتاب.
وجاء الترتيب في صورة فصول، وضع المؤلف في الفصل الأول ومقدمة كتبها الأستاذ (فخري كريم) عرض منها لمرحلة نشوء الوعي الثوري في الدولة العراقية الحديثة، فيما تضمن الفصل الثاني عرضاً لما كُتب عن مُنجزه مهم (روايته الرباعية)، وتعريف بروايته الثانية (قضية حمزة الخلف).
وتضمّن أيضاً كتابات وملاحظات عنه وعن تجربته الصحفية وإنطباعات الآخرين عنه، وبعض الشعر أيضاً، أما الفصل الثالث فوضع فيه بعض النصوص المُستلّة من ملفّه في مديرية الأمن العام حيث عثر عليه ضمن ملايين الملفات التي وقعت في حيازة المواطنين بعد سقوط النظام عام 2003.
وعرض الفصل الرابع نماذج مما كتبه مع بعض التعليقات، واحتوى الفصل الخامس ملحقاً للصور ذات الصلة بحياته وبالمحيط الذي عاش فيه.
