مصنف هذا الديوان "كثير بن عبد الرحمن بن مخارف بن ربيعة بن يعرب بن قحطان"، لم تذكر المصادر السنة التي ولد فيها، لكنها اتفقت على أن وفاته كانت سنة 105هـ في آخر خلافة يزيد بن عبد الملك أو أول خلافة هشام مما يجعل تاريخ ولادته سنة 23 أو 24هـ أي في أواخر خلافة عمر أو أوائل خلافة عثمان بن عفان رضي الله عنهما، غير أن مشاركته في الحياة العامة على الصعيد الشعري لم تحصل قبل سنة 65هـ، وقد بلغ الأربعين من عمره أو تجاوزها، وهي سن متأخرة لشاعر من مستوى كثير بدأ نشاطه الشعري في سن مبكرة.
أما والد الشاعر فقد توفي في حداثة ولده، وعلى أثرها كفله عمه وكان رجلاً صالحاً، فاشترى له قطيعاً من الإبل حيث أمضى فترة لا بأس بها من حياته في خدمة عمه، وفي إحدى المرات كان يسوق غنماً إلى الجار، وهي منطقة على ساحل البحر الأحمر، فلما بلغ موضع الخبت وقف على نسوة من بني ضمرة، فسألهن عن أقرب ماء يورد إليه غنمه، وكانت فيهم فتاة صغيرة السن تكلفت بإرشاده إلى الماء، وكانت هي عزة التي نشب حبّها في قلبه من يومئذ والتي كتب فيها أجمل ما قال من غزل.
كانت عزة التي أحبها هي بنت حميل بن حفص بن غفار، فهي كنانية النسب، ويكنيها كثير بأم عمرو، ويقال أنها كانت "امرأة حلوة بارعة الكلام، وما يوجد في الدنيا امرأة تفوقها جمالاً وحسناً وحلاوة". ويبدو أن تشهير كثيرة بعزة قد حدا بأهلها إلى تزويجها بأول خاطب، فأمعن الشاعر في غزله مدفوعاً بقوة اليأس والتحدي معاً، ثم ازداد جوعاً وصبابة بعد رحيل عزة مع زوجها وقومها إلى مصر.
وقد ظل يوم "الشبا" وهو وادٍ "بالأثيل" قرب المدينة في الأيام التي لا تنسى، حيث أدرك الشاعر فيه صاحبته وهي ترحل إلى مصر، فوقف واجماً محاولاً أن يثبت لها وحده على فراقها وهو معتصر القلب وقد جفت دموعه شاهدة على مشاعره الملتهبة: "فلم أدر أن العين قبل فراقها غداة الشبا من لاعج الوجد تجمد، ولم أر مثل العين ضنت بمائها عليّ ولا مثلي على الدمع يحسد".
