لم يعرف الشرق مطرباً أو مطربة التف حولها المعجبون كما التفوا حول أم كلثوم، فإن أردت أن تقول إنها مطربة المثقفين جاء كلامك صادقاً كما لو قلت إنها مطربة البسطاء من الناس، كذلك لو قلت إنها مطربة الكبار فإن الصغار يدعونها لأنفسهم. إن جمهورها يكاد يشمل كل الشعوب العربية، بالإضافة إلى كونها مطربة المدينة والريف كما هي مطربة الأغنياء والفقراء، إنها حقاً مطربة الجميع حتى ليصح فيها ما قيل في الشاعر العظيم أبي الطيب المتنبي "لقد ملأ الدنيا وشغل الناس".
ولم تمتزج الفنون العظيمة (الشعر واللحن والغناء) في تآلف وتناسق وانسجام في تاريخها كما امتزجت في تسجيلات أم كلثوم وأسطواناتها. فقد اجتمعت هذه الفنون بفضل أم كلثوم لتكون الأغنية الكلثومية التي جمعت المجد من جميع أطرافه أي روعة وعذوبة اللحن وكمال الأداء.
وما عسى أن نقول في سيدة الغناء العربي التي خلفت داخل لغتنا لغة يفهمها ويرددها الملايين من الناس. إنها صوت أم كلثوم الذي ينطق بكل مشاعر الناس فيعبر عن أفراحهم وأحزانهم، إنه صوت الحب في كل أطواره وحالاته، إنه صوت الوطن، صوت الثورة، صوت الأجيال الرافضة للهزيمة والمجسدة لطموحات الثورة العربية.
إن هذه المرأة التي تسلط هذه الدراسة عليها الضوء انطلقن مع رحلة أم كلثوم الغنائية من قرية صغيرة في الريف المصري لتزرع البهجة والأمل في نفوس الملايين من البشر، فتوقفت عند كافة محطات حياتها الشخصية والفنية فعرضت لولادتها وانطلاقتها في عالم الفن، انتقالها إلى القاهرة، دخولها السينما... كما واستعرض كلمات الأغنيات التي خلقتها مثبتاً نص الأغاني وفقاً للتسلسل الألفبائي ذاكراً السنة التي ظهرت فيها كل أغنية.
