شهدت تونس خلال العهد الحفصي، من أوائل القرن السابع الهجري إلى العاشر ومن القرن الثاني عشر الميلادي إلى الخامس عشر ازدهاراً ثقافياً ونهضة عمرانية ونشاطاً علمياً، مما جعلها مركز إشعاع حضاري عظيم كان مبعث إعجاب كبير في نفوس من زارها إذّاك من الدجالين المغاربة والأندلسيين والغربيين والمشارقة، فكتبوا منوهين مشدوهين بما وصلت إليه تونس في عصرهم من نهضة أدبية وعلمية وثقافية وعمرانية بكثرة علمائها وأدبائها وشعرائها وزهادها من جهة، وبروعة مبانيها وتعدد جوامعها ومساجدها ومدارسها والتفنن في بناء القصور وتنضيد البساتين من جهة أخرى. وليرجع المرء إلى النصوص الراجعة إلى العهد الحفصي والتي كتبها رحّالون أمثال التجاني والبلدي والعيدري وابن رشيد وابن بطوطة وليرن الأفريقي وغيرهم، أو كتبها مؤرخون أمثال الزركشي في "تاريخ الدولتين الموحدية والحفصية" وابن الشماع في "الأدلة البينة النورانية على مفاخر الدولة الحفصية" وابن خلدون في تاريخه، فسيجد تصوير للمكانة الرفيعة التي بلغتها تونس بين البلدان بمعالمها الجبلية وقصورها المترفة وبساتينها التي تغني فيها النوافير وتهدل الأطيار، وتتأرج الروائح… وبأخلاق أهلها العالية ولطف شمائلهم وتربيتهم الرفيعة. وقد حاول الباحث أن يرسم في أطروحته هذه معالم هذه النهضة الفكرية والثقافية والأدبية مخصصاً فصولاً طويلة لمجالس تونس العلمية والأدبية والشعرية التي كانت تعقد في الجوامع والمساجد والقصور، مبيناً دور العلماء والأدباء وما كانت تتميز به طرق التعليم التونسية من سمات جعلت الطلبة يقبلون من كل مكان لينهلوا ويعلوا من العلم بالحاضرة الحفصية.
