يهدف هذا المعجم إلى تناول القارئ العربي-وخصوصاً طلاب الجامعات والثانويات-لمادة البيولوجيا اعتماداً على مراجعه الأصلية باللغتين الفرنسية والإنكليزية. يحوي هذا المعجم على مئات المصطلحات الأساسية، مع تعريف علمي دقيق لكل مصطلح، وقد شارك في تأليفها بالإنكليزية صفوة من رجال العلم في دائرة المعاجم المرجعية في دار "كولنز" البريطانية، فجاء أشبه بمعجم موسوعي مبسط يجد في الطالب والمعلم حاجته من مصطلحات غير معروفة أو تقتصر تعريفاتها عن تأدية معانيها الصحيحة.
كما وجاء عمل المؤلفين فريداً من حيث توخي الدقة في التعبير والاختيار، كذلك جاء عمل المترجمين والمراجعين مميزاً في هذا المعجم من حيث انتقاء المقابلات العربية والفرنسية التي روعي أن تكون بسيطة وسهلة، ومفهومة قدر الإمكان.
إن معجم الجيب هذا هو بحق أداة تثقيف من نوع خاص، وضع لإعانة الطلاب والأساتذة وعامة القراء على تفهم المفردات والمصطلحات البيولوجية في عالم اليوم، وعلى استعمالها استعمالاً صحيحاً قوامه دقة اختيار اللفظ ووضوح المدلول.
