إذا كان مصطلح العولمة جديداً، فإن عملية العولمة ذاتها قائمة منذ قرون طويلة. وتركز معظم الكتابات المعاصرة على العولمة في سياقاتها الاقتصادية أو التقنية أو المعلوماتية، ولكن في حقيقة الأمر فإن العولمة قبل أن تكون عولمة تقنية أو معلوماتية كانت قبل ذلك بكثير عولمة ثقافية. وهي في جوهرها توسع المعايير الاجتماعية-الثقافية لتصبح عالمية، بمعنى أن الهويات والولاءات أخذت تتعولم. ويمكننا القول إن العولمة الثقافية بدأت مع الديانات الكونية، وأكثر هذه الديانات طموحاً الإسلام والمسيحية، إذا اعتبرت كل ديانة من هاتين الديانتين أنها جاءت إلى البشرية جمعاء، كما سعت هاتان الديانتان إلى أن يعتنق أهل الأرض جميعاً عقائدهما.
ويتتبع الدكتور علي الأمين المزروعي في محاضرته التي عقدها يوم الاثنين الموافق في 3 تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر 1997 في مركز الإمارات للدراسات والبحوث الاستراتيجية والتي جاءت تحت عنوان الإسلام والديمقراطية الغربية والثورة الصناعية الثالثة: "صراع أم التقاء" يتتبع المسيرة التاريخية لكل من الإسلام والمسيحية، ويعقد مقارنة بينهما لكي يتوصل إلى تحديد ما إذا كانت هناك روابط بين العقيدة الدينية والنظرية الديمقراطية، أو بين الديمقراطية الليبرالية وظهور الرأسمالية أو بين التعددية الدينية والتعددية السياسية. كما ويناقش المحاضر أيضاً أثر ثورة المعلومات في عولمة الإسلام، في محاولة للإجابة على السؤالين التاليين: هل ستشمل هذه العولمة حركة إصلاح ديني هي في غاية الأهمية؟ وهل ستفعل "الانترنت" والثورة الصناعية التالية بالإسلام ما فعلته الثورة الصناعية بالمسيحية.
