عندما رحل علي مزروعي تحدّثت بعض الصحف ووسائل الإعلام العالميّة عن "رحيل المثقّف العملاق" و"وفاة صرح فكري"، وغير ذلك من الصفات التي تذكّرت مزروعي كأحد أبرز المفكّرين والأكاديميين في عالمنا المعاصر.
كان مزروعي من الشخصيات الثقافيّة العامة، فقد أدخله برنامجه الشهير "الأفارقة" إلى المشهد الإعلامي والجماهيري، بكل ما صاحب البرنامج من ضجّة حينها، ولد في مومباسا، كينيا، عام 1933، وحصل على شهادة الدكتوراه من جامعة أكسفورد البريطانية عام 1966، رأس خلال حياته الأكاديمية الحافلة عدداً من أقسام العلوم السياسية في أكثر من جامعة أميركية، إلى أن توفي سنة 2014 في الولايات المتحدة ودُفن في مومباسا بموطنه الكيني.
تعدّدت كتابات مزروعي في الدراسات السياسية والإجتماعية الخاصة بإفريقيا، والإسلام، وحقبة ما بعد الإستعمار، كما أفادت ثقافته الواسعة بتنوّعها الإسلامي والإفريقي والغربي في جعله مثقّفاً وأصلاً للثقافات، ومخاطباً مؤثّراً، ومعرّفاً بقضايا المجتمعات الشرقية، والإفريقية منها على وجه الخصوص.
في هذا الكتاب يناقش مزروعي العلاقة بين الثقافة والقوّة، وتقاطعات السياسة مع الثقافة في أوجهها الأيديولوجية، كما يقدّم هنا أحد أهم النقاشات العميقة لرواية سلمان رشدي آيات شيطانيّة، حيث نحا في نقده للرواية منحىً جديداً لم يسبق إليه: الخيانة الثقافية، وكانت له آراء متّسمة بالجِدّة والأهميّة عن قضايا المرأة في العالم، وإذا كانت بعض الأحداث التي ناقشها مزروعي في كتابه هذا القُوى الثّقافيَّة في السِّياسة العالميَّة قد مرّ عليها أكثر من عقدين، إلا أنّ جوانبها الفكرية والثقافيّة لا تزال حاضرة اليوم ربما بأكثر مما مضى وأشدّ أثراً.
