وقد روعي كذلك عند التعرض لمصدر من مصادر الطاقة الاهتمام بالمصطلحات الأساسية الخاصة بالمواد وطرق الإنتاج والمعدات المنتجة والمستخدمة، كما روعي أن يكون تعريف المصطلح تعريفاً وظائفياً بحيث يستدل منه على مجال الاستخدام. وقد جاء التعريف في معظم الأحيان مشمولاً بتقدمة تحدد مجال الاستعمال، ومكتفياً ذاتياً بقدر الإمكان، ومبتعداً عن الإحالات التي تسبب في كثير من الأحيان تشتت القارئ.
