يعدّ الفلاسفة اليونانيون أول من فكّر في تركيب المادة حيث ذهبوا إلى أن كل شيء يتألف من جسيمات صغيرة لا ترى بالعين المجردة ولا يمكن تجزئتها إلى أجزاء أصغر منها. وقد أطلقوا على هذه الجسيمات اسم "الذرات"، غير أن جون دالتن هو أول من أعطى تفسيراً علمياً لهذه الذرات في العصر الحديث، إذ قال: إنه بالرغم من صغر الذرات أي عنصر إلا أنها تتصف بجميع صفاته، وجميع ذرات العنصر الواحد متماثلة وقد تجتمع ذرات العناصر مختلفة فتكون المركبات الكيميائية.
وفي هذا الكتاب يتناول المؤلف أحدث ما توصل إليه العلماء بشأن الذرة، في كتاب منهجي موجّه لطلبة كليات العلوم، كما أنه مفيد للمتخصصين والباحثين عن المعرفة.
يتناول المؤلف بالدراسة المجالات الكهربائية والمغناطيسية، والإلكترون والجسيمات الموجبة الشحنة، كما يعرض لبدايات نظرية الكم والنظرية الموجبة والجسيمة، والأشعة السينية. ويتطرق إلى البحث في النشاط الإشعاعي الطبيعي، والاضمحلال النووي الاصطناعي، والانشطار النووي، والمفاعلات النووية. ويخصص المؤلف جزءاً من الكتاب للحديث عن استخدام الذرة في الأغراض السلمية.
