توالت التجارب بشكل كبير لدراسة الذرة، ، ففي عام 1897م اكتشف العالم "طومسون" الإلكترون ذو الشحنة السالبة، مما أدى لتغيير جذري في الاعتقادات السابقة ، كما توصل "طومسون" إلى أن الذرة متعادلة كهربائياً، ومُصمتة، وموجبة الشحنة، وتتخللها الإلكترونات السالبة ، وسُمي هذا النموذج باسمه، الذي ساهم في فهم الذرة فهماً جديداً واسعاً ، وفي عام 1911 م قدم العالم "راذرفورد" النموذج النووي للذرة، وأثبت وجود النواة .
وبما أنّ الذرّة هي وحدة بناء الكون، فكان ولا يزال أمرها يشغل بال العلماء حتى الآن، ولذلك توجه الكثير من العلماء لدراستها وقاموا بعمل نماذج توضح كيفيه بناء الذرّة، ومكوناتها؟
يسعي هذا الكتاب ، الذي كتبه سير جورج باجيت طومسون ، للإجابة عن بعض هذه الأسئلة ، وقد نشر لأول مرة عام 1930 م ثُم أخرج الطبعة الثانية عام 1937 م؛ والثالثة عام 1946 م؛ والرابعة عام 1954 م ، لذا استمتع بهذا الكنز الذي بين يديك فهو إرث علمي يشرح تاريخ الذرة بالتفصيل.
