تعنى الجغرافية البشرية بتنظيم شؤون الإنسان وعلاقته ببعضه البعض الآخر فيما له اتصال بالحياة في بيئة خاصة؛ لأن تنظيم شؤون الإنسان يختلف في وقت عنه في آخر وفي بيئة عنه في في بيئة أخرى. فما الجغرافية البشرية إلا وليدة البيئة من حيث أن الإنسان يعيش في أنواع مختلفة من البيئات وبناء على ذلك فقد اختلفت استجابته لها لأن كل بيئة تتطلب نظاماً خاصاً من الحياة يختلف عما هو في البيئة الأخرى وتتطلب نشاطاً معيناً يختلف عما هو في البيئات الأخرى. وإلى جانب ذلك فإن الجغرافية البشرية تعنى من بين ما تعنى بأحوال الشعوب الفطرية ومدى تأثير البيئات الطبيعية عليها لأن الشعوب البدائية أكثر استجابة وخضوعاً لتأثير البيئات المختلفة. ولقد مرت الجغرافية في تطورها في مراحل مختلفة متباينة كان لها الصدارة في بعضها وموضوعاً ثانوياً في البعض اآخر، كما تعددت مواضيعها ومدارسها في كل من غرب أوروبا وشرقها والعالم الجديد، وكان لها تأثيرها في الفكر الجغرافي في العالم أجمع.
في هذا الإطار يأتي كتاب "أصول الجغرافية البشرية" حيث يحاول مؤلفاه إبراز مفهوم الجغرافية البشرية وبيان مجال دراستها واهتمامها عن طريق معالجة بعض نواحي العلاقات المتبادلة بين الإنسان وبيئته الطبيعية التي هي جوهر الجغرافية البشرية وبؤرته.
والكتاب موجّه لطلاب الدراسات الجغرافية في الجامعات العربية بوجه عام ولدارس مادة الجغرافية البشرية في جامعة الكويت بوجه خاص، وهو يتفق مع أحدث المدارس في الجغرافية البشرية العربية والأوروبية والأمريكية.
