كانت العرب أكثر مم العالم دقة في اختيار أسماء شهورها، لما فيها من دلالة على طبائع الأزمنة التي حُدَّت فيها..
فقد حدّ مثلاً شهرا صفر: المحرم والآخر، في زمن الخريف، وهو زمن تصفر فيه منازلهم منهم، لخروجهم عنها إلى البادية، وحدّ شهرا ربيع: الأول والآخر، في زمن الشتاء، وهو الزمن الذي كانوا يعودون فيه من البداية، ليرتبعوا في منازلهم، فالاتباع هنا الإقامة، وهما كشهري كانون: الأول والثاني عند أهل الشام، سيما بذلك من الكنّ، وهو جذر مشترك بين اللغات العربية (السامية)، ومن معانيه: الإقامة والبيت والموقد والمصطلى...
وقد تبين من استقراء أخبار العرب، أنهم كانوا يعتدون في الفصول الطبيعية وعدد السنين بدورة منازل القمر، وفي حساب الشهور بدورة القمر نفسه، والمنازل للقمر كالبروج للشمس، أي نهم كانوا يتبعون تقويماً مواسمهم تقوم في أوقات ثابتة تقريباً من الفصول الطبيعية، سواء في ذلك مواسم الحج والعبادة والصوم والأسواق الكبار والأعياد.
لذلك اتخذت المواسم أساساً في هذا البحث، لأن تَبْسِيط الأمور يقتضي رَدَّها إلى أُصولها، وأصلُ الحاجةِ إلى العلم بالأزمنةِ والأوقاتِ ناشِئٌ من الحاجة إلى معرفة مواسم الأمطار والرياح والبرد والعِبَادات ونحوها...
وعلى ذلك كان لا بُدَّ لنا في هذا الباب من البحث مَوضُوعَيْن، أولاً في تقسيم الأزمنة عند عرب الجاهلية، ثم في أمور النَّسِيء والنَّسَأَة، حتى نقفَ على الحقيقة في هذا الشأنِ الذي كانت تتعلَّقُ به مواسمُ أسواقهم وحَجُّهم وزراعتهم وأسفارهم.
