يعالج الكتاب مقولة فلسفية وتاريخية على جانب كبير من الأهمية: هي مقولة الزمان في المجال الثقافي الإسلامي الوسيط. فقد تكاثرت النظريات والرؤى عن الزمان في الإسلام ومن أبرزها اعتباره زمناً ارتدادياً. وقد حاول المؤلف هنا الابتعاد عن طرح الرؤى الشاملة فيما يتصل بهذه المقولة وأثر معالجتها عيانياً عن طريق دراسة تحليلية لنصوص ثلاثة من كبار مفكري الإسلام هم ابن سينا، والرازي الطبيب والمعري. توصل المؤلف إلى أنه لا يمكن الذهاب إلى وجود نظرة واحدة لهذه المقولة في المجال الإسلامي الوسيط، وإن هناك مدارس فكرية مختلفة في رؤية الزمان كما في الأمور الفلسفية والكلامية والفقهية الأخرى، كما قارن المؤلف النصوص التي درسها بأفكار المدارس الفلسفية الحديثة مظهراً أوجه الشبه وأوجه التباعد مما يعطي وهذه المقاربة بعدها الحديث في المنهجية وفي الشمول.
