إن المتأمل في الشعر العربي القديم يجد ثمة علاقة بيّنة تربط بين الشاعر وبيئته، وتتخذ من عنصري الزمان والمكان مرتكزاً أساسياُ يُكسب هذه العلاقة صبغة خاصة، وقد تتعمق هذه العلاقة وتتوطد، فتتحول إلى رؤية تختزل التصوّر العام للكون والحياة، وفق منظور معين.
ولأن عنصري الزمان والمكان في الشعر الجاهلي من أهم عناصر الخلق الفني (الفكري والجمالي) عند الشاعر الجاهلي، أولى الدكتور باديس فوغالي أهمية بالغة لدراستها قناعة منه أن القصيدة الجاهلية في مضامينها، وأبعادها الفكرية والجمالية قصيدة كونية ولهذا فهي ترتبط بعنصري الزمان والمكان، فبدأ بالحديث عن نشأة الشعر الجاهلي، والوزن بشقيه: الإيقاع الداخلي، والإيقاع الخارجي، وتوفر عنصر الخيال، إضافة إلى خاصية التفرد والتميز التي تميز شاعراً عن آخر. كما حاول المؤلف تحديد الفترة الزمنية، التي قيل فيها ما وصل إلينا من شعر جاهلي، مستدلاً بآراء النقاد والمهتمين، ومستنيراً بالنتائج التي تساوقت في ظاهرة التطور التي عرفها الشعر العربي، حيث قطع وسعاً زمنياً هاماً تدرج فيه من مظهر التعبير الصوتي، والأداء الإنشادي في صورة تراتيل إجتماعية، وترانيم دينية حتى انتهى إلى الهيئة التي عرف بها على مستوى الإيقاع والنسج.
وبالإستناد إلى ما تقدم انطوت الدراسة على مقدمة وبابين: المقدمة عن نشأة الشعر الجاهلي ومفاهيم الدراسة، أما الباب الأول فخصص لـ "تجربة الشاعر الجاهلي في مواجهة الزمن" بينما خصص الباب الثاني لـ "تجربة الشاعر الجاهلي في مواجهة المكان".
