الأبيقورية, كالرواقية فلسفة عمل, سعت مثلها الى نجاة الإنسان وتمكينه من بلوغ السكينة, انطلاقاً من مبدأ (العيش في وفاق مع الطبيعة), الطبيعة المشتركة كلها: طبيعة الإنسان, وطبيعة العالم أجمع, الطبيعة التي كل ما فيها, حسب الأبيقورية, يتكون وينحل تبعاً لاجتماع وافتراق ذرات لا يعينهما شيء. وهكذا كانت الأبيقورية مذهباً حسياً, وعملياً سلوك اعتزال جماعة من الأصدقاء يتوارون عن الأنظار في ما سمي بحديقة أبيقور, ويتلذذون في الزهد, شاكرين الطبيعة التي جعلت ميسوراً تحصيل اللذات الطبيعية الضرورية, التي تقوّم سلوك الحكيم, الذي يأبى أن يستسلم منجرفاً مع الدوار المجنون حيث يضيع الآخرون, فيعيش اللحظة الحاضرة, خلواً من صنوف الاضطراب, ساخراً من القدر, محتقراً الألم, بهذا يتصالح الإنسان مع الطبيعة, وينعم الحكيم بالسكينة, لأن من يعيش وسط الخيرات الخالدة, لا يشابه الكائن الفاني في شيء. هذا الكتاب يلقي الضوء على جانب هام من الفكر العالمي, منذ نشأته, وتطوره على مر الزمان حتى يومنا هذا, وتفاعله مع الجوانب الأخرى من الفكر والتطور الإنسانيين.
