كما قدم تصحيحاً بالغ الأهمية يتصف الأبيقورية التي عانت منذ حياة منشئها وإلى أيامنا هذه الكثير من سوء الفهم بل من الفهم الخاطئ، حيث فهم التلذذ بزهد غذاء يسد الرمق وشراب يقطع العطش، زهد يجعل الإنسان يضارع الآلهة في غبطتها أو "إلهاً بين البشر" على أنه إسترسال وإستسلام للملذات، وفهم الرفض للمفهوم السوقي للآلهة اليونانية والذي جعل الإله على مثال الإنسان على أنه كفر وإلحاد، وربما يكون ساهم في نشأة هذا المفهوم الخاطئ وتطوره إلحاح أبيقور على اللذة الحسية والمباشرة والبديهية.
