أحداث الرواية تقع في عام 2029، حيث تعود "ثريّا لوكاس" إلى سورية بحثاً عن ذكرياتها الّتي غرقت مع مركب رماها على شاطئ لارنكا القبرصي، حين كانت في الخامسة من عمرها (عام 2014). تبدأ رحلتها من منطقة بحرية نائية اسمها "وادي قنديل". هناك تقع على مذكرات لكاتبة اسمها "غَيم حدّاد" تسرد فيها غَيم فصولاً من حياتها وحياة بعض الأصدقاء والمدن قبل وخلال الحرب. وعبر هذه المذكرات ستتعرّف ثريّا على مراحل كانت تجهلها من حياة السوريين في تلك الفترة، خاصّة أن أبطال المخطوط ينتمون إلى بيئات ومناطق مختلفة، ما يقلب مخطّط رحلتها. فتقرّر ثريّا البحث عن مصائر شخصيات غَيم حدّاد.
من أجواء الرواية نقرأ: ... "كنتُ أقفُ من وراء بلّور شبّاك الصالة أراقب مرور سيّاراتٍ محمّلةٍ ببيوتٍ وأهلها، أراقبُها كيف ترحل، وأنا واقفةٌ خلف بلّور الشّبّاك، لا أحد يراني، لا أحد يلوّح لي، الكلّ يريد اللحاق بتلك الحياة الّتي على بُعد ربع ساعة. التّفكير بأنني وحدي سأواجه ما يهرب منه الجميع، يا للرّعب! لا يستطيع الإنسان إلاّ الإيمان بذلك، أقصد الإيمان بأنّ وجوده ضمن جماعة يشكّل عامل أمان له، هو ليس أماناً فعليّاً، لكن، فلنقُل الارتياح لتقاسم الكارثة مع الآخرين. أعرف أنْ لا منطقَ في ذلك، أصلًا المنطق أوّل الهاربين في ظروفٍ كهذه. الأسوأ في هذا كلّه هو أنّكَ لا تستطيع رؤية نفسكَ على هيئة بطل حكاية، هربَ سُكّانُها، وتركوه ينفرد ببطولته المطلقة، عقلُكَ يضعكَ أمام الحقيقة القاسية: أنتَ ضحيّةٌ لأمرٍ تجهلُه، ضحيّةٌ لا يسعُها الآن إلاّ محاولة نسيان أنّها مَنسيّة، وأنّ ثمّة حياة كاملة على بُعد ربع ساعة منها. كنتُ أيضاً أراقب الشّارع الفرعيّ، وقد تحوّل إلى رئيسيّ، حظُّهُ (أو ربّما سوء حظِّه) حوَّلَهُ جزءاً من طريق النّجاة هذا، جعلَهُ أكثر حزناً من قبل حين كان مجرّد شارعٍ فرعيّ، تملأُ وجهه الحفر...".
