كان نسيب بائساً عبّر عن بؤسه في ما نظمه من شعر ولم يترك سوى ديوان هو "الأرواح الحائرة" الذي يدلّ عنوانه على مضمونه، فالشاعر متشائم حائر في هذا الوجود جاء إليه من غير إرادته وتركه مقهوراً.
يمتاز شعر نسيب عريضة برحابة الخيال وصدق النبرة والترفع عن الكلام المبتذل والمعاني الساقطة والهجاء اللاذع والمديح المتكلَّف والبُعد عن النزعة المنبرية، وهو من الشعراء الذين سعوا إلى التجديد في الشعر العربي من حيث الشكل والمضمون.
فشكوى الشاعر من خلال عناصر الطبيعة تشكل بعداً وجدانياً متدفقاً ومعبراً عن إحساسه بآلام الحياة وشقائها... وإحساسه تالياً بضرورة دفع ذلك الشقاء... والتخفيف من آلام الإنسان.
أمر آخر تجدر الإشارة إليه وهو أن نسيب عريضة التفت إلى واقع أمته العربية وحاول أن يستنهضها وينتشلها من المستنقع الذي نقبع فيه، فنظم في الدفاع عن فلسطين التي كانت مهدّدة من قبل الصهيونية؛ وقال في قصيدته "النهاية" التي نظمها سنة 1917 يأساً من الشعب العربي: كَفِّنوهُ!... وادفنوه!... أسكنوه... هُوّةَ اللحد العميقْ... واذهبوا. لا تندبوه، فهو شعبٌ... ميّتٌ ليس يفيق.
هذا هو الشاعر المهجري نسيب عريضة، الذي يُعد أهم شاعر سوري من شعراء المهجر، والذي فهم الشعر على أنه إحساس صادق، وإبداع أصيل، وخيال رحب، وديباجة لا تهوى الزخرف والتنميق، وترفض الزيف والتصنّع.
