يضمُّ هذا الكتاب بين دفتيه تسع دراسات نقدية، صبت جل إهتمامها على الجوانب الفنية في الشعر المعاصر والحديث وتطور جماليات القصيدة العربية، بدءاً من تخوم النص الجاهلي وصولاً إلى منازل القصيدة الحديثة، بكثير من التكثيف والإيجاز، فرأينا في اثنتين منها كيف برزت مسألة إستفهام عناصر التراث أدوات فنية بفعل بواعث كثيرة فنية وثقافية ونفسية، وأحياناً سياسية وإجتماعية: فقد وجد الشاعر العربي نفسه يكتب وعنقه بين قطع الرقابة الإجتماعية والدينية وسيف الرقابة، فهل يبيع لهؤلاء الرقباء حريته ويصمت أو يلجأ إلى وسائل فنية جديدة تمكنه من قول ما يريد من غير أن يدفع ثمناً باهظاً، قد يصل إلى تكفيره أو قتله!... وسواء لجأ أولئك الشعراء مما ذكرنا أم لا فإنهم قد طرحوا بين أيدينا نصوصاً باهرة امتازت مما سبقها بكثير من الجماليات الجديدة، فكانت النقمة التي انصبت على رؤوس بعضهم نعمة على الأدب العربي، وكانوا – بالفعل كما عبر شيلي ذات يوم كهنة الوعي الذي لا يدرك ومرايا الظلال الهائلة التي يلقيها المستقبل على الحاضر... مشرعي العالم غير المعترف بهم.
كما ستلاحظ أن أربعاً من الدراسات المذكورة رصدت صورة المرأة، وأشكال حضورها في أعمال أربعة شعراء من أقطار مختلفة وأجيال متتالية منذ الثلث الأول من القرن الماضي حتى مشارف الألفية الثالثة، وسيلمس القارئ كيف ترافق التطور في نظرة الشاعر إلى المرأة من النواحي جميعها مع تطور وسائل تعبيره، وتطور أدواته الفنية، وجماليات التناول بصورة عامة.
كما أفرد الكتاب بحثاً لتطور البنية الإيقاعية الذي حققته قصيدة التفعلية الحرّة من خلال تناول تجربة لافتة في هذا المجال.
