الإيمان هو الانشغال بهم إلى أقصى حد، وبواعث الإيمان هي بواعث الهم الأقصى عند الإنسان، هذا هو التعريف الذي يقدمه المؤلف لمفردة "الإيمان" التي يقول عنها إنها مفردة تربك وتضلل وتخلق على التوالي الشكلية والتعصب والمقاومة العقلية والاستسلام الانفعالي ورفض الدين الأصيل والتعرض للبدائل.
لذا يحاول هنا إعادة تأويل الكلمة لإزالة التشوش الذي لحق بها، فهو يفسر هنا الكيفية التي يرتبط بها الإيمان بوصفه فعلاً شخصياً بالبنية العقلية لشخصية الإنسان التي تتضح في لغته ذات المعنى وفي قدرته على معرفة الحقيقي وفعل الخير.
كما أنه يبين كيف تكون جماعة الإنسان ممكنة دون كبت استقلال الحياة الروحية للإنسان، ثم يشير إلى التنوع الذي لا حصر له للرموز ولأنماط الإيمان المتباينة الكثيرة وهو يؤكد أن الإيمان واقعي في كل حقب التاريخ، لكن هذه الواقعية لا تبرهن على أنه إمكانية أو ضرورية جوهرية. إذ إن غاية ما يريد المؤلف أن يطرحه في هذا الكتاب هو السؤال عما إذا كان مثل هذا الاعتقاد يقوم على تبصر أو سوء فهم وكأن الجواب أن رفض الإيمان يتجذر في سوء فهم كامل لطبيعة الإيمان، فهو يناقش أشكالاً كثيرة من سوء الفهم والتأويلات المغلوطة.
