ولد في دبلن، وتلقي علومه فيها وفي جامعة أكسفورد. يعد واحد من كبار الأدباء العالميين في العصر الحديث، هيأت له مهاراته في الحوار وفي عرض الأفكار النادرة، وجرأته في الأفكار الساخرة، مكانة عالية في المجتمع، وكانت من العناصر الأساسية التي بنيت عليها شهرته الأدبية.
برع في الشعر والمقالة والرواية والمسرحية، من كتبه: "قصائد" (1881، "مقاصد" (1891) وهو مجموعة مقالات، "صورة دوريان غراي"(1891) وهو رواية. ومن مسرحياته الناجحة: "مروحة الليدي وندرمير"(1892).
وفي كتاب "الأمير السعيد"(1888) أحداث مشوقة تكتشف عما في أعماق النفس البشرية من خير وجمال. وفيه يستخدم المؤلف الأسطورة ليعطي أفكاره قوة إيحاء وزخماً ويزيد الكتاب تشويقاً الرسوم الملونة الرائعة التي تزين صفحاته.
