إنّ المحاولات، الّتي يقوم بها مترجمو القصص القصيرة، إنّما تهدف إلى التعريف بهذا الجنس السرديّ، ولهذا الغرض قمنا باختيار وترجمة أربعة عشر نموذجاً لمجموعة من أشهر كتّاب القصّة القصيرة في العالم، كلّها إِمّا مكتوبة بالإِنجليزيّة أو مترجمة إِليها؛ وسيجد القارئ أنّ الكاتب الروسي "أنطون تشيكوف" قد نال نصيب الأسد، حيث اخترنا له ثلاثاً من قصصه؛ وكذلك الكاتب الفرنسيّ الشهير "جي دي موباسان" الّذي اخترنا له قصّتين.
أمّا القصص التسع الأخرى فقد اخترناها لكتّاب نالوا شهرةً واسعةً في عالم الأدب والقصّة القصيرة، مثل الدنماركيّ "هانز كريستيان أندرسن"، والإنجليزيّين "أوسكار وايلد"، و"سومرست موم"، وأمّا الأمريكيّون فقد اخترنا لأربعةٍ من أشهر كتّابهم مثل "إِدجار ألن بو"، و"توني موريسون" الّتي حصلت على جائزة نوِبل للآداب؛ وكذلك اخترنا قصّة للكاتب الهنديّ الكبير رابندرانات طاغور الّذي نال جائزة نوبل أيضاً، وهو الوحيد في هذه المجموعة الّذي اخترناه من خارج الثقافة الغربيّة.
