الأفانين هي أغصان الأشجار المستقيمة، والأغصان هي التي تحمل من الثمر ما لذّ وطاب، وفُنَّنَ الثوبُ: نُسِج نسجاً مختلفاً رقَّ بعضُه وكثُف بعضه، وفَنَّنَ الشيءَ: جعله فُنوناً وأَنواعاً، وفَنَّ الفَنَّانُ: تَفَنَّنَ فِي فَنِّهِ وَمَا أَتَى بِهِ مِنْ إِبْدَاعٍ.
وهذا الكتاب يستحق صفة الأفانين، لأن مؤلّفه تفنّن فيه من الشعر، بما يعجب القارئ والمتذوق، بل بما يدهشها، وهو دليل على قدرة شعرية إبداعية ندر أن تجدها عند شعراء آخرين، فأتى فيه بألوان من الشعر وأنواع من القصائد لا تشبه بعضها لا في الوزن ولا في المضمون، إذ تجد كل مجموعة من القصائد لوناً متميزاً عن الآخر بصفات جمالية إبداعية.
