تعد حركة التشيع إحدى الميزات الهامة للقرن الرابع الهجري، لا بل أبرز ميزاته نشاطاً علمياً وحراكاً ثقافياً. والمتتبع لنشاط الدول الشيعية التي قامت في ذلك العهد، يلحظ -بما لا يقبله الشك- الدعم الهائل للحركة العلمية والثقافية، وهذا أمر لم يخف على الدارسين والباحثين فأغنوا المكتبات العربية والإسلامية والعالمية كتباً وأبحاثاً ودراسات، تلقي أضواء على إنجازات هذه الدول حضارياً وثقافياً.
ولئن كانت الدراسات حول هذا العصر كثيرة، فإن آفاق البحث لا تقفل، وكثيراً ما تبقى في الآفاق ساحات بكر، تفوت الباحثين، ويغفل عنها الدارسون.
يقدم العلامة الشيخ علي العزيز الإبراهيم في كتابه هذا "التشيع في طرابلس وبلاد الشام" على سير أغوار مدينة طرابلس، بدءاً من التسمية تاريخاً ولغة، وصولاً إلى الدور الحضاري الريادي الذي لعبته، وهو في بحثه يستكشف جغرافيتها وديموغرافيتها، و لا يفوته أن يستطلع محيطها وعلاقتها به، ما يغني البحث، ويقدم للقارئ رؤية شاملة تساعده على استكشاف الواقع الحقيقي لتلك المدينة.
ولعل أبرز ما استند إليه الكاتب في بحثه ودراسته مدونات المؤرخ الشهير "ناصر خسرو" الذي لاحظ أن أهل طرابلس في العام 428هـ كانوا شيعة، وأن بني عمار كانوا على مذهب الشيعة الإمامية الإثني عشرية. ويقدم الكاتب في بحثه صورة مشرقة لطرابلس -الشام ويكشف النقاب عن ازدهارها وتقدم مستوى العلم والثقافة فيها أيام عز الدولة الفاطمي الشيعي.
كما يفرد فصلاً للحديث عن بني عمار وإنجازاتهم الثقافية والعلمية وإنشائهم مدرسة ومكتبة ذاع صيتهما في ذلك الزمان، حتى انجذب إليهما أشهر الأدباء والعلماء والشعراء العرب.
