لشعر اللصوص طرافته، واندفاعاته، بالإضافة إلى ذلك هو يصور حياة فئة من الناس، خيل لهذه الفئة بأن اللصوصية يمكن أن تحل مشكلة الغنى والفقر، فثارت على مجتمعه ثورة فردية، فقتل بعض وسجن بعض، وهرب بعض آخر إلى القفار والبسابس يعاشر الضباع والذئاب، وبقي البعض طول حياته فقيراً.
هذه الطرافة في شعر اللصوص وهذا التصوير لحياتهم دفعا المؤلف إلى تتبع شعرهم في كل مظانه، ليتوصل إلى موسوعته التي نقلب صفحاتها في أشعار اللصوص وأخبارهم. جاء صيده هذا ضمن ثلاثة مجلدات. في المجلد الأول عرض ما عثر عليه من أشعار سبعة عشر لصاً، أربعة منه تمّ تناولهم في الجزء الأول من هذا المجلد، وهم: سليمان بن عياش السعدي، يعلى الأحول الأزدي، جعدة بن طريف السعدي، لوط الطائي. والثلاثة عشر الباقين تمّ تناولهم في جزء المجلد الثاني، منهم: عياش الضبي، القيحان العكلي، أبو حردبة، صنيعة بن قيس الثعلبي، عبيد بن أيوب العنبري، عبيد الله بن الحر الجعفي، مالك بن ريب المازني. وضم الجزء الثالث الذي وقع في المجلد الثاني من هذه الموسوعة سبعة شعراء، أما الذين يقوا منهم، وهم أكثر من ستة وعشرين شاعراً فقد ضمهم الجزء الرابع في المجلد الثاني، والجزء الخامس في المجلد الثالث، وأما الجزء السادس والأخير في المجلد الثالث فقد ضمّ دراسة وافية للشعراء اللصوص وخصائص شعرهم... وأسباب ظهور هذه الفئة من الثوار في العصر الجاهلي ثم في العصور الإسلامية.
