يحاول الباحث في هذا الكتاب رفع الظلم الذي حاق بالمعري لاتهامه بالإلحاد، ولإهمال شاعريته، فأقبل على ديوانه (سقط الزند) و(لزوم ما لا يلزم) يقرؤها مراراً، ليجد نفسه أمام إنسان مؤمن كل الإيمان، مسلم حق الإسلام، ولينبري مدافعاً عن إسلام هذا الشاعر وعن شاعريته التي قلّ من تحدث عنها. فكان هذان الأمران هما محور المعالجة في هذا الكتاب الذي قسم إلى قسمين. القسم الأول، يبرز الباحث فيه المعري مؤمناً مسلماً، يدعو إلى الله يوحده ويؤمن بقدرته، مورداً الشواهد على ذلك من شعره. والقسم الثني تحدث فيه عن شاعرية المعري ذاكراً ما قاله القدماء، وإن كان قليلاً عن شعره متتبعاً كتب التراث واحداً بعد واحد، منوهاً بعد ذلك بما قاله المحدثون عن شاعريته ممن أنصفه أو ظلمه، مستعرضاً تعاريف الشعر وخصائصه مطبقاً هذه الخصائص على شعر أبي العلاء منتهياً إلى نتيجة أن المعري كان شاعراً في الدرجة الأولى وفيلسوفاً اجتماعياً في الدرجة الثانية. فبرأ المباحث بعمله هذا المعري من تهمتين أولاهما أنه كان ملحداً، وثانيتهما أنه كان فيلسوفاً ولم يكن شاعراً.
